About Dalhousie Lighthouse
Dalhousie Lighthouse is a short white wooden tower with a red lantern sitting on a low rocky point at the edge of Chaleur Bay. Curved metal spars arch up around the lantern like the ribs of a birdcage, and no other lighthouse in Canada still has that, so make sure to highlight it in your compositions. The tower is only 11m tall so its easy to pair with its surroundings or a big blue water backdrop. The shore rocks at low tide and the grass in front of the campground both work as foreground adding colour and texture. The point is wide open so you can walk right around it and put the bay, the town or the hills behind it depending on what suits your shooting style. Across the water to the north the Gaspé shore of Quebec rises as a long blue ridge, which gives. The point faces east into Chaleur Bay, so sunrise comes straight up out of the water behind the tower, and the white paint takes the first warm light while the red lantern goes orange. Evening light comes from behind you and lights the whole face of the tower against a darkening bay, which is easier to expose and just as good. It's a small light, but the setting and that lantern make it worth a stop on a drive up the coast. (Dalhousie, New Brunswick, Canada)
