David M. Roderick Wildlife Reserve
This reserve protects the longest undeveloped stretch of Lake Erie shoreline between Buffalo and Toledo, giving you a rare stretch of wild lakefront completely free of buildings, docks, or development cluttering the horizon. The combination of sandy beaches, driftwood-strewn shoreline, wetlands, and open water creates a variety of compositions to work with, from intimate foreground detail to wide panoramic lake views. Sunrise is the prime time to visit, with soft golden light skimming across the water and no crowds to contend with; the eastern-facing shoreline catches early light beautifully. A wide-angle lens suits the expansive beach and sky, while a telephoto helps isolate distant lake freighters or shorebirds. The terrain is natural and unmanicured, so wear appropriate footwear and expect some walking over uneven ground to reach the best shoreline positions.
