Devil's Castle is a dramatic, near-vertical mountain that plunges straight into the Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord in East Greenland, creating one of the most imposing natural backdrops you will find anywhere in the Arctic. The peak rises sharply from the water's edge, and the fjord in front of it is frequently scattered with icebergs ranging from small growlers to massive tabular chunks, giving you endless foreground options. Shoot from your boat at water level to emphasize the scale of the mountain reflected in the still fjord surface, or position an iceberg in the mid-ground to create depth between you and the cliff face. Overcast light softens the harsh contrasts on the rock face and brings out the blue tones in the ice, though golden hour in the Arctic summer can paint the mountain in warm amber. A 24-70mm covers most compositions well, but a telephoto lets you compress the icebergs against the wall. Access is by boat only. (Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord, Greenland)
