Devil's Golf Course is one of Death Valley's most visually striking geological formations, a vast salt flat covered in jagged halite crystal clusters that stretch toward the surrounding mountain ranges. The textures here are extraordinary, sharp spires and rough crystalline formations that reward close-up macro work as much as wide-angle landscape shots. Get low to the ground with a wide lens, around 16-24mm, to emphasize the foreground texture while including the Panamint Mountains in the background. Early morning and late afternoon light rakes across the surface at a low angle, casting deep shadows that make the crystals look almost sculptural. Midday should be avoided as the harsh overhead sun flattens everything out and the heat can be brutal. The parking area puts you right at the site with no hiking required, so bring a polarizing filter to cut glare from the white salt surface and watch your step as the formations are extremely sharp underfoot.
