Devil's Slide Bunker
Perched on a crumbling clifftop along the San Mateo coast, this abandoned World War II concrete bunker offers a striking combination of rugged military architecture, dramatic ocean views, and sheer coastal cliffs dropping into the Pacific. The bunker itself makes a compelling foreground element, with its weathered concrete and dark window openings framing the horizon or the rocky shoreline far below. Position yourself at the cliff edge to capture the bunker against the open ocean, or get low and shoot through the window slits for a framed perspective out to sea. Golden hour light, especially in the late afternoon, rakes across the concrete textures and warms the surrounding headlands beautifully. Fog rolling in from the Pacific adds atmosphere and a moody, isolated quality. A wide angle lens between 16mm and 24mm works well here. Access is via a short hike along the Devil's Slide Trail, which is paved and easy to walk. (Pacifica, California, United States)
