Diablo Dam
Diablo Dam is a striking concrete arch dam nestled deep in the North Cascades, where the structure meets the vivid turquoise waters of Diablo Lake in a setting that feels almost surreal. The lake's intense color comes from glacial flour suspended in the water, making it one of the most photogenic reservoirs in the Pacific Northwest. You can shoot from the road above for a wide perspective that shows the full curve of the dam against the surrounding peaks, or get closer to the dam crest for detail shots emphasizing the geometry of the concrete against the impossibly blue water below. Midday light actually works surprisingly well here since the color of the lake pops under bright sun, though overcast days add a moody quality to the canyon walls. A wide to standard zoom in the 16-50mm range covers most compositions. Access is via Highway 20, and the viewpoints are easy to reach without technical hiking.
