About Henry River Mill Village/Hunger Games District 12 Village
The historic Henry River Mill Village is both photogenic and famous for being the filming location for District 12 in The Hunger Games. This preserved 1920s textile mill town features original wooden worker homes, including Katniss Everdeen's house and Peeta Mellark's bakery (the former Company Store). Late afternoon, into golden hour create warm, atmospheric light hitting the weathered wood siding. Overcast days are amazing if your photography style is more a cinematic, moody, and post-apocalyptic vibe. The village is a great location for a wide variety of compositions ranging from atmospheric portraits, to rustic street line compositions, and textured architectural details using medium-to-telephoto lenses. In autumn the trees around the village add rich colours to contrast with an otherwise muted scene. The whole village is open to the public but you will need an admission ticket to get close to the buildings. There is lots of visitor parking on site (4255 Henry River Rd. Make sure to check the opening days before you go, since the village runs has a much shorter schedule through the winter. If you want lots of time to experiment with the light, you can even book a night in one of the restored mill houses. While you are shooting, remember that this is a preserved historical site, so stay on designated paths and respect the property guidelines. (Hickory, North Carolina, United States)
