Drina River House
The Drina River House is exactly what it sounds like, a small wooden cottage sitting alone on a rock in the middle of the Drina near the town of Bajina Bašta in western Serbia, and it is one of those subjects that needs almost nothing from you to work. Local kids first built it back in the 1960s, the river has swept it away and had it rebuilt more than once, and that slightly precarious look is a big part of the charm, a lonely little house perched on bare stone with green water moving all around it. The classic shot is from the Serbian bank looking out across the channel, where a standard to short telephoto lens lets you compress the house against the mountains and keep the framing tight, while a wider lens pulls in more of the valley and sky. Still air early in the morning gives the glassiest water and the best mirror image before any breeze breaks it up, and this is a spot where flat overcast light actually helps, leaning into the moody, fairytale feel rather than fighting it, so you do not need a bright day to come away with something strong. Keep an eye on river level, because it shifts with the season and after heavy rain, exposing more of the rock when the water is low and creeping up the base when it runs high, which changes the whole mood of the scene. The pull-off near town is an easy stop. (Bajina Bašta, Western Serbia, Serbia)
