Duntze Head

Duntze Head is a historic gun battery perched on a rocky point within CFB Esquimalt, offering sweeping views across the harbour entrance toward the iconic Fisgard Lighthouse, Canada's oldest lighthouse on the Pacific coast. The combination of rugged shoreline, open water, and that distant red-and-white lighthouse creates a compelling layered composition, especially when you position yourself low on the rocks to foreground texture against the scene. A telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range works well for compressing the distance and isolating the lighthouse against the water, while a wide angle captures the full sweep of the bay. Golden hour light in the late afternoon is particularly rewarding, casting warm tones across the water and the historic stonework of the battery. Keep in mind that access is restricted to military personnel, their families, and escorted visitors, so plan ahead and arrange entry before making the trip.
