El Bosc de les Creus

Perched on a scorched hilltop in rural Catalonia, this hauntingly beautiful installation features hundreds of handmade crosses planted across a fire-ravaged landscape, creating a powerful visual field that stretches in every direction. The stark contrast between the pale crosses and the dark, charred earth makes for compelling imagery in almost any light, but overcast days are particularly good, as soft diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and lets the texture and repetition of the crosses carry the image. Shoot wide to capture the scale of the installation against the open sky, or get low and use a longer focal length to compress the crosses into a dense, layered composition. Early morning and golden hour both add warmth and long shadows that emphasize the three-dimensional depth of the scene. The site is accessible by a short walk from a nearby road, and there are no crowds, giving you freedom to explore angles without interruption. (Catalonia, Spain)
