About El Cajón Dam
El Cajón Dam is a soaring curved wall of concrete wedged into a narrow canyon holding back the waters of the Río Humuya. Standing over 220m tall, it's the highest arch dam in the Americas, and its pale grey face really stands against its rich green surroundings. There is a viewpoint along the road near the dam where you can easily stop to take in the full length of the wall as it fills the canyon. A wide lens fits the whole curve, while a longer lens picks out the lines and texture in the concrete. The curve shows off best when the sun comes across the wall in the morning or late afternoon, since midday light flattens out the grey. For a completely different view, you can join a tour on one of the local boats that head out onto the reservoir, plus keep an eye out for big flocks of cormorants over the water. It is an active power plant, so you will have to stick to the public area around the dam and reservoir. Cabins and a restaurant close by make it easy to stay the night and capture either sunrise or sunset over the dam. (Torre, Cortés, Honduras)
