Elias Comstock Cabin

Elias Comstock Cabin is a little one room log cabin in Curwood Castle Park and is the oldest home still standing in the city. It was built in 1836 by Owosso's first settler, Judge Elias Comstock. Over the years the family kept building around the cabin until it was completely hidden inside the larger house, and was only discovered in 1920 when a company started tearing the larger house down and found the old logs inside. The cabin was carefully preserved and turned into a museum. It is a classic rustic shooting subject with its dark wood, simple lines and rich texture. You can get in tight to capture the intricate building details like the corner notching and the worn wood, or step back into the broader parkland to capture the whole cabin framed by trees. The brown logs warm up under a low sun, so early morning or late afternoon is the best time to shoot. Autumn can be especially nice here with the colour in the park. While the cabin is a museum, it is only opens for select events, so being about to access the inside is hit or miss.
