Elkhorn Slough
Elkhorn Slough is a sprawling tidal estuary along the Monterey Bay coast, where winding channels, pickleweed marshes, and mudflats create a moody, layered landscape that rewards patient photographers. The slough is best known for its remarkably relaxed sea otters, which haul out and wrap themselves in kelp near the docks at Moss Landing Harbor, making them easy to photograph without a boat. Shoot from the harbor's edge for tight portraits with a 200-400mm lens, or pull back wide to include the weathered dock pilings and reflective water. Early morning gives you the softest light and the calmest water surface, which mirrors the sky beautifully in the channels. Fog is common here and adds real atmosphere rather than ruining shots. The public viewing areas at Moss Landing are easy to reach and require no permits; the Elkhorn Slough Safari kayak tours put you at water level for unique low angles.
