The Emerald Lakes are a trio of water filled explosion craters near the summit of Mt Tongariro. The lakes have brilliant colours caused by dissolved minerals, washed down from the thermal area of nearby Red Crater. This view is close to the midpoint along the beautiful Tongariro Alpine Crossing (which is quite strenuous but one of the most impressive walks in New Zealand). When you descend from the red crater you suddenly see them and will be stunned by the view. (Tongariro National Park, New Zealand)
