Enggros is a traditional village built right out over the water of Youtefa Bay. This cluster of timber houses stands on tall poles above the sea, linked by plank walkways and served entirely by slim wooden canoes. Here you are photographing a whole community that lives above the water, so your photography adventure can focus on a variey of themes. You can feature the poles and their reflections or the boats criss-crossing between houses or take a more documentary style using the rhythm of a village that moves around on and above the sea rather than on streets. The best vantage point is from the on the water itself. On a boat you can line the houses up on their stilts with the mirror underneath, drift in close to the walkways for leading lines and the everyday comings and goings, or hang back and let a long lens pull a single canoe into a clean patch of open bay with the green hills behind. Its best to aim to shoot at first light when the bay is glassiest so the reflections hold. Reaching the village is a short paddle or motor across the bay arranged on the Jayapura side, so plan on being on the water to get there, and since this is a lived-in community it is worth going with someone local. While you are shooting make sure to respect the privacy of the locals and remember to ask before you turn your camera on people or their homes. (Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia)
