Equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington
This 1840s equestrian sculpture of Wellington sits in the middle of Glasgow by Royal Exchange Square, in front of the Gallery of Modern Art (previously the neo-classical Stirling Library). By traditions Glaswegians display their sense of humour and irreverence for 'great' authority figures by climbing the statue and placing a traffic cone on the Iron Duke's head. This practice has been going on for several decades and these days the authorities have not only given up trying to stop this folk tradition and effectively turn a blind eye to it.
