About Exe Estuary at Turf Lock
Turf Point and Lock sits at the seaward end of the Exeter Ship Canal, between the canal and the Exe Estuary. The lock lets boats out into the estuary, and the point beyond it narrows to a spit of grass and shingle. The Turf, a timber framed pub from the 1820s, stands beside the lock. Low tide is when to be here. The water pulls back to wide mudflats, so the old timber posts and rotting frames appear out of the mud along the shoreline. Those make an amazing foreground. Getting low, allows you to shoot east across the flats to Lympstone with the hills behind it. The point faces out to the east so sunrise comes up over the water. Wet mud holds colour long after the sun has moved round behind you. If you are interested in wildlife photography, birds fill the estuary from autumn through spring. The nearest parking is about a mile up the canal near Exminster. The whole estuary is a protected site, so make sure to keep to the paths and the foreshore. (Exminster, Devon, England)
