Fabyan Windmill
This Dutch-style windmill rising 68 feet above the Fox River valley is one of the most distinctive historic structures near Chicago, offering a rare chance to photograph a fully preserved 19th-century working windmill in a natural forest preserve setting. The wooden sails and weathered exterior photograph beautifully in soft morning light, when golden tones bring out the texture of the aged wood and the surrounding trees add depth to the frame. Try shooting from low angles to emphasize the height and drama of the structure, or pull back with a wider lens to include the landscape and sky. A telephoto lets you isolate the sail details and craftsmanship. The surrounding grounds give you room to circle the windmill and find clean compositions without obstructions. Visit on overcast days for even lighting that prevents harsh shadows on the intricate woodwork. Parking is easy and the site is flat and walkable. (Batavia, Illinois, United States)
