Fairview Lift Bridge
This rusted, abandoned railroad lift bridge spans the Yellowstone River near the North Dakota and Montana border, offering a striking industrial subject surrounded by wide open plains and quiet river scenery. The vertical lift towers and latticed steel framework give you strong geometric lines to work with; shooting from the riverbank below lets you frame the full structure against the sky, while getting onto the bridge itself allows for long leading-line compositions down the deck toward the towers. Early morning light is ideal, with soft directional rays catching the weathered metal and reflecting off the river below. Golden hour in either direction rewards patience, especially when the sky adds color behind the structure. A wide to mid-range lens handles the full span well, while a telephoto compresses the towers against distant bluffs. Access the bridge via the dirt road south of ND 200 near Cartwright; the terrain is manageable but wear sturdy footwear. (Cartwright, North Dakota, United States)
