Falkirk Tunnel

Falkirk Tunnel - Photo by John Gray1 / 1

This 630-meter Victorian canal tunnel carries the Union Canal beneath Prospect Hill and offers one of the most dramatic architectural compositions in Scotland. The long, arched brick interior creates an almost perfectly symmetrical leading line that draws the eye deep into the tunnel, and the colourful LED lighting system adds vivid reflections on the still water below. Position yourself at either entrance and shoot straight down the central axis for maximum impact; a wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well to emphasise the curved ceiling and compress the sense of depth. The lighting inside means you can shoot any time of day, though arriving in low ambient light conditions lets the LED colours pop more vividly against the darkness. Bring a tripod for long exposure shots, as the still canal water will mirror the arch and lights beautifully. The tunnel entrance is a short walk from Falkirk High Station, making it very easy to reach. (Falkirk, Scotland, United Kingdom)
