First Baptist Church of Selma was built from big blocks of rough-cut grey stone in 1904. The tower stands imposingly on the corner of Dallas Avenue and Lauderdale Street with its four storeys of stone topped with a cone of dark slate. Gargoyles stick out below the roof line where they once carried rainwater off the tower. Start at the corner diagonally across the intersection, where a wide lens lets you highlight the tower and both faces of the church at once with a rich blue sky overhead. Then you can get in close under the tower with a telephoto and focus on the gargoyles with their intricate carving details. Watch which face is lit when you arrive and shoot that side, if you want to highlight the texture of the stonework. Inside there is a stained glass window designed by Selma artist Clara Weaver Parrish and a Tiffany mosaic. It worth asking at the church office about seeing them outside service times. Street parking is easy and the sidewalks give you lots of angles to experiment with. (Selma, Alabama, United States)
