Forks of Cypress Ruins

Forks of Cypress Ruins - Photo by Blake Wylie1 / 1

Built in 1830 and devastated by fire in 1966, this haunting plantation ruin consists of 24 Ionic columns standing in a full perimeter colonnade, the walls and roof long gone, leaving only the skeletal columns open to the sky. The visual impact is striking, a ring of stone columns framing nothing but trees and light, which gives you strong graphic compositions from nearly any angle. Walk the full perimeter to find your best shot; shooting from low and wide with a 16-35mm lens emphasizes the scale and repetition of the columns against the sky. Early morning and overcast days work best, as dappled sunlight through the surrounding trees can create harsh contrast, while flat light lets the columns read cleanly. Golden hour brings warm tones to the stone and adds atmosphere. The site is accessible via a short walk from the parking area and is generally open during daylight hours.
