Fotlandsfossen is a stepped waterfall tucked behind the historic Fotland Mølle mill, where the cascades flow down a series of natural rock tiers alongside a constructed salmon ladder, creating layered compositions you rarely find at more well-known falls. The staircase structure of the water gives you strong leading lines and multiple levels to work with, whether you are shooting tight on individual cascades or pulling back for a wider frame that includes the surrounding greenery and mill architecture. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full sequence of steps, while a telephoto lets you isolate specific sections. Overcast days are ideal here since the soft, diffused light reduces harsh shadows in the narrow gorge and brings out the texture of the wet rock. The area also attracts white-throated dippers and grey wagtails, so patience near the water can reward you with wildlife shots as well. (Bryne, Rogaland, Norway)
