Garreg Ddu Dam
Garreg Ddu is one of the most unusual dams in Wales, a submerged stone structure in the Elan Valley that sits almost entirely below the waterline, with only its elegant arched bridge visible above the surface. The water level dramatically changes the character of the scene, and when levels are high, the arches appear to float just above the reservoir, creating a striking reflection shot that rewards a wide angle lens. Position yourself on the bankside path to frame the bridge symmetrically with the treeline behind it, or get lower to the water's edge to emphasize the reflection. Overcast days work particularly well here, softening the light and reducing glare on the water's surface. Early morning mist rising off the reservoir adds real atmosphere. The valley road runs alongside and parking is straightforward, with the dam easily accessible on foot within a few minutes. (Rhayader, Powys, Wales)
