Gila River
The Florence-Kelvin Bridge offers an elevated vantage point over the Gila River, where the slow-moving water winds through a corridor of cottonwood trees and desert scrub in central Arizona. The bridge itself works as a compositional anchor, with its metal railings and spans framing the river below as a leading line drawing the eye upstream or downstream. Shoot from either end of the bridge to get the structure in the foreground with the river stretching back into the landscape, or look straight down for abstract reflections and patterns in the water. Golden hour light is ideal here, especially in fall when the cottonwoods turn yellow and contrast sharply against the red-tinged desert soil. Access is straightforward via Highway 177, and the bridge has enough width to set up a tripod safely. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full river valley context.
