The Silver Pavilion is a 15th-century Zen temple set against the wooded slopes of Higashiyama, offering a quieter and arguably more atmospheric alternative to its famous golden counterpart across the city. The two-story pavilion reflected in the still pond below is the signature shot, best composed from the viewing path just inside the main gate where you can frame the structure with moss, water, and manicured pines. The cone-shaped sand mound, Kogetsudai, is a striking geometric subject on its own. Early morning on a weekday gives you the softest light and the thinnest crowds, with mist sometimes drifting off the forested hillside behind the temple. A 24-70mm or 35mm prime works well for most compositions; bring a wide angle for the elevated garden path that runs above the grounds and offers a broader view over the rooftops and city below.
