The Golden Valley Norwegian Lutheran Church sits all by itself on a small square of grass with fields stretching out to the horizon on every side. It's a classic white clapboard church dating back to the early 1900s. The church has been sitting abandoned for decades with its white paint job slowly fading away. Historic headstones are scattered across the grass surrounding the chapel some upright, some leaning, and some have fallen to the ground. Stepping back with a wide lens lets you capture the graves, church, and a huge sky all in one shot. It is so quiet out here that you can go long from the gravel road and use it as a leading line to pull the eye into the the church yard against the fields. There is nothing else on the horizon, so you can use the sky to highlight how isolated this church has become. The last hour before sunset warms the paint to almost a cream colour. You can also watch storms come across the prairies and add a dynamic sky over this peaceful church. It sits on a small gravel road just off of Grassy Butte Rd, a few minutes east of Highway 79. Stay on the grass and outside the building since it has been abandoned so long the interior is not accessible. (Ralph, South Dakota, United States)
