About Gorges de l’Areuse
The Gorges de l'Areuse is a limestone river canyon on the edge of Boudry, where you wind your way along the river surrounded by rock walls. Pale grey rock rises straight out of the river on both sides. As you explore the gorge the Areuse River switches between foaming chutes and calm pools, with moss covering nearly every boulder. If you start at the eastern end of the trail (just off Chemin des Clées you will immediately head upstream past the Pont des Clées and pass through the Gor de Brayes, the narrowest and deepest stretch of the trail. The path also runs along the cliff well above the water on this side of the trail. As the trail winds along the gorge you can pause to use a longer lens that will pick out the footbridge crossing the canyon to layer it against the rock walls. If you start at the western end (just off of Rue du Furcil) you can follow the trail as it crosses the river 17 times in a variety of ways from steel footbridges to the old stone arch at Saut de Brot. Very little direct sun gets down to the bottom of the gorge, so a bright day tends to leave you with blown highlights on the water and black shadows in the rock. Overcast days, or atleast clouds breaking up the sun, will even everything out and keep the moss a rich green instead of a dull olive. Make sure you have a tripod in your kit so you can experiment with using a slow shutter to turn the rapids into smoother flows around the boulders. The full trail from end to end winds through the gorge for roughly 12 km, so you will want to make a plan for getting back to your car. (Boudry, Neuchâtel, Switzerland)
