Gottorf Castle sits on its own island in the Schlei estuary, a sprawling Renaissance complex that has anchored the town of Schleswig since the 16th century. The Dutch Renaissance facade on the west wing is the most rewarding subject, with its ornate detailing and layered stonework reading beautifully in soft overcast light that eliminates harsh shadows on the carved surfaces. Approach from the bridge connecting the island to the mainland for a classic wide establishing shot, or work along the water's edge to capture reflections of the whitewashed walls and towers in the surrounding moat. A 24-70mm lens handles most situations well, though a wider focal length lets you include foreground water. Early morning gives you the best chance of calm reflections and minimal crowds. The castle grounds are walkable and accessible, with multiple angles available by simply circling the perimeter path. (Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany)
