Grannagh Castle

Grannagh Castle is a ruined medival castle sitting on the north bank of the River Suir. The Butlers of Ormond built most of what's left, and Cromwell's cannon finished it in 1650. Nobody lived there after that. The river side is the castle's best side. If you can get onto the Waterford side of the river, you can capture the whole enclosure with water in front of it. From the Grannagh side the tower house sits tall and square against the open sky. Grey, overcast light pairs better with the stonework than hard sun does. If you are able to, aim to come at either end of the day so the walls pick up some warmth and the sky is filled rich tones. It's a state owned national monument in the care of the OPW so hopefully it won't fall down completely. For safety, the interior sits behind gates, so plan on only being able to capture the outside. It is an amazing little gem tucked away just off of the N24. You can park at the nearby Grannagh Public Slip while you explore the castle ruins. (Grannagh, County Kilkenny, Ireland)
