Great Dome of MIT
Perched at the heart of MIT's campus, the Great Dome crowns the Barker Engineering Library and anchors one of the most recognizable academic skylines in the United States. Its neoclassical form, with grand Ionic columns and a wide stepped approach, gives you strong geometric lines to work with. The most iconic angle is from Massachusetts Avenue, where you can frame the dome at the end of the broad ceremonial axis, using the flanking buildings to create a natural leading line toward the structure. A wide to standard lens in the 24-50mm range works well here. Early morning light hits the dome's facade cleanly with minimal crowds, while overcast days soften shadows and reveal the stone's texture. You can also cross the Longfellow Bridge or shoot from the Charles River Esplanade to capture the dome rising above the Cambridge skyline. (Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States)
