Grič Tunnel (Tunel Grič)

Grič Tunnel is a unique shooting gem that runs under Upper Town in central Zagreb, linking Mesnička Street on the west end with Radićeva Street on the east. It was originally built in 1943 as an air raid shelter and used again for shelter during the war in the 1990s. The tunnel opened as a public pathway in 2016. Inside it's a plain concrete passage, lit the whole way, that is perfect for leading lines and rhythm focused photography. Standing in the middle of the corridor creates amazing perspective lines that pull your eye deep into the composition. Light levels in the tunnel are always low so make sure bring something fast or plan on bracing against a wall. If your style is more about street/urban photography the wide central hall is the best spot to include people in your frames. If you take your time and be patient you should be able to put a figure against the arch and still get the walls in. A few old warning signs survived the renovation and can add a scene of history or scale to your photos. In December an Advent light installation fills the tunnel, which changes the feel of the tunnel competely, but also brings crowds. Entry is free. Some entrances close during events and the route turns to a one way path, so you may have to walk around to access the tunnel from the other side. (Zagreb, Croatia)
