Grimes Canyon Overlook

Grimes Canyon Overlook - Photo by jpramzyfotos1 / 1

Grimes Canyon Overlook sits along Highway 23 north of Los Angeles, where a winding two-lane road cuts through a narrow canyon lined with rocky walls and dense vegetation. The real draw here is the sweeping S-curve of the road below, which makes a natural leading line and gives your images a strong sense of depth and motion. Shoot from the small pullout on the west side of the road, pointing down into the canyon to compress the curves with a telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range. Golden hour and sunset work especially well, as warm sidelight rakes across the canyon walls and brings out texture in the rock. Once the light drops, stay for blue hour and long exposures to capture smooth light trails from passing cars winding through the curves below. The pullout is small but accessible from the highway with no hiking required. (Ventura County, California, United States)
