Groene Havenlicht (Green Harbour Light)
The Groene Havenlicht is an eye catching green and white beacon standing at the end of the Zuidelijk Havenhoofd, the southern breakwater at the entrance to Scheveningen Harbour. There is two breakwaters framing the harbour mouth. The northern breakwater is home to an almost identical beacon painted in bright red. Since the southern breakwater isn't attached to the main beachfront it gets a fraction of the foot traffic, making it a much more relaxed spot to shoot from. From the end the North Sea stretches out endlessly in front of you with a flow of ships entering and leaving the harbour. On a clear evening the sun drops straight into the sea, making sunset is the perfect time to be here. Stormy weather is equally worth the visit. Waves crash against the breakwater and the spray can be quite dramatic and fun to capture. It is exposed and windy out there, so dress for it and protect your gear. The red beacon on the northern breakwater is visible across the harbour entrance and you can frame both beacons together from certain angles along the breakwater. The whole area is free and accessible at all times, making it the perfect spot to experiment with both sunset and night photography. (Scheveningen, The Hague, Netherlands)
