Gummer's How
Gummer's How is a modest but rewarding summit in the southern Lake District, offering one of the finest elevated views over Windermere, England's longest lake. From the rocky top, you get broad panoramas stretching across the water toward the central fells, with the lake's wooded shores and scattered islands providing strong foreground interest. Work around the summit rocks to find different compositions, using the craggy outcrops as foreground elements against the lake below. A wide angle lens suits the expansive views well, though a short telephoto helps compress the layers of fells receding into the distance. Golden hour is exceptional here, with low light catching the water's surface and warming the surrounding hillsides. The walk up takes around 30 to 45 minutes from the small car park on the Cartmel Fell road, making it accessible without a demanding hike. Overcast days with dramatic cloud layers also work beautifully for moody landscape shots. (Staveley-in-Cartmel, Cumbria, England)
