Sitting on a hilltop overlooking the water are the ruins of an abandoned stone mansion in Ha Ha Tonka State Park. The soaring walls of this structure were the brainchild of Robert Snyder, a wealthy Kansas Business Man who dreamed of building a European Style castle in the park. Construction began in 1905, but following a car accident that killed Robert Snyder (Missouri's first), he never got to see it finished. His sons continued work on the project, and the castle was completed in 1920. Eventually, however, the Snyder family fortune faded, and the Snyder family ultimately lost the land and castle due to monies owing on taxes. The  Ha Ha Tonka Castle was converted to a hotel and a lodge for a period and then eventually destroyed in a fire in 1942. Missouri eventually purchased the land, and the castle and the ruins can now be explored by visitors to Ha Ha Tonka State Park.  (Ha Ha Tonka State Park, Missouri, USA)
