Hakone-jinja Shrine is an old grand shrine constructed during the Nara Period (in757) by Mangan Shonin. The approach to the shrine is lined with old cedar trees, some of which 600-800 years old, and the himeshara pure forest behind the shrine has been designated a Kanagawa Prefecture Natural Monument. Lake Ashinoko can be seen reflecting Mt. Fuji in the distance, and the shrine is thus surrounded by magnificent natural scenery. During the day it can get quite busy so we recommend you arrive either early in the day or closer to sunset to avoid most of the crowds. (Hakone, Kanagawa, Japan)
