Harlem Meer
Harlem Meer is a peaceful, tree-lined lake tucked into the northeast corner of Central Park, offering a quieter alternative to the park's more crowded southern areas. The meandering shoreline gives you plenty of compositions to work with, from reflections of surrounding trees and sky on calm mornings to ducks and herons moving through the shallows. Shoot from the water's edge along the northern bank to capture the widest stretch of open water, or work the southern shoreline where overhanging branches frame the scene nicely. A mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range handles most situations well here. Early morning is ideal, when the light is soft, the water is still, and foot traffic is minimal, making clean reflections much easier to capture. Fall foliage transforms the surrounding canopy into rich oranges and reds that reflect beautifully on the water's surface. The Dana Discovery Center on the north shore provides easy access and a convenient reference point for orientation. (New York City, New York, United States)
