Hauge Lutheran Church
This small white clapboard church, built in 1847, is one of the oldest Norwegian Lutheran churches in America and carries a quiet, timeless quality that photographs beautifully against the surrounding rural Illinois landscape. The simple gabled facade and modest steeple work well with a slightly low angle to emphasize the structure against an open sky, and a wide to standard focal length in the 24 to 50mm range lets you capture the full building without distortion. Overcast days are ideal here, softening shadows and bringing out the texture of the white painted wood, though golden hour light raking across the facade adds warmth and depth. The surrounding cemetery offers additional compositions, with weathered headstones in the foreground and the church set behind. The site sits along a quiet rural road with easy roadside access and minimal traffic, giving you room to work without distraction. (Sheridan Township, Illinois, United States)
