Hermitage Caves

Hermitage Caves - Photo by marijana1 1 / 1

Carved into the limestone cliffs of Marjan Hill, these medieval cave hermitages sit tucked behind St. Jerome Church, offering a compelling mix of ancient religious architecture and raw rock face. The caves themselves are shallow and intimate, so wide to standard zoom lenses work well for capturing the carved facades against the surrounding cliff. Position yourself slightly below and to the side to show the relationship between the man-made stonework and the natural rock, or step back to include the church and cypress trees for a fuller composition. Morning light hits the south-facing cliff face cleanly, bringing out the warm tones of the limestone without harsh shadows. The site is reachable via a short walk up the forested Marjan Hill paths, and the area just below the caves gives you a solid vantage point with the blue Adriatic visible in the background on clear days.
