The High Bridge lifts Smith Avenue nearly fifty metres over the Mississippi River, as the tallest bridge in St Paul. Its long arched span soars over the river below creating many photogenic views. Standing on the bridge lets you look out over the river to downtown, with the domed Cathedral of Saint Paul rising on its hill to the north. You can easily frame the skyline and cathedral through the bridge's steelwork, and if you are lucky even catch a riverboat passing by below. You can also head down to the river bank and the bridge becomes the subject with its tall arch sprawling across the water. The views from the bridge deck are especially photogenic in the evening and at night. The skyline and lit cathedral glow, the bridge lights come on, and everything reflects in the calm river below. For the wider view there is a bluff at the nearby Cherokee Park that looks straight back at the bridge and downtown beyond. Autumn adds warm colour through the river valley. The walkway is open and free, with street parking at either end and more up at the park. Just keep an eye on the traffic and the wind, since you are up quite high on a busy road bridge.
