The Hill of the Buddha, located at Makomanai Takino Cemetery in Sapporo, Hokkaido, is a striking site where a monumental 13.5-meter-tall Buddha statue is partially enclosed within a circular hill blanketed in seasonal lavender. Designed by architect Tadao Ando, the structure creates a powerful visual contrast between raw concrete and soft natural elements, offering a unique perspective for architectural and landscape photography. Visitors approach the statue through a long tunnel, emerging into an open sky view that dramatically frames the Buddha’s head. Best visited in summer when the lavender is in full bloom, the site also transforms with snow in winter, providing different moods year-round. The location is easily reached by car or local transport from central Sapporo. (Hokkaido, Japan)
