Holy Rude is one of Scotland's most historically layered churches, a medieval parish church built in the 15th century that still holds its original open timber roof and stands just below Stirling Castle on the volcanic crag. The exterior offers strong architectural lines with the tower as a natural focal point, while the surrounding graveyard gives you foreground interest with weathered headstones framing the stonework. Shooting from the lower ground to the south lets you stack the church against the castle above, creating a compelling two-layer composition that captures Stirling's dramatic topography. Overcast days work particularly well here, as Scotland's soft diffused light brings out the texture in the aged sandstone without harsh shadows. A mid-range zoom around 24-70mm handles both the wide establishing shots and tighter details like the carved stonework and arched windows. Parking is nearby on Castle Wynd and the site is freely accessible year-round. (Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland)
