Hotel Gault

Hotel Gault - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Hotel Gault is a striking example of adaptive reuse architecture in Old Montreal, where a mid-19th century textile warehouse has been transformed while preserving its cast-iron facade and large arched windows. The building sits on a quiet corner that gives you room to step back and work with a wide angle lens, letting the symmetrical rows of windows and ornate stonework fill your frame. Shooting from across the intersection allows you to capture the full corner elevation, and the layered facade responds beautifully to raking light that emphasizes its texture and depth. Early morning is ideal here, when the streets are empty and soft directional light catches the facade without harsh shadows or foot traffic cluttering your foreground. Look for reflections in the large ground-floor windows and use the strong vertical lines to anchor your composition. A 24-35mm lens works well for capturing the full structure without too much distortion. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
