Hurst Point Lighthouse sits at the end of a long shingle spit stretching out into the Solent, giving you a dramatic natural leading line before you even reach it. The narrow gravel bank forces a single approach path, and you can use the texture and curve of the spit itself to draw the eye toward the lighthouse and the ruined Hurst Castle beside it. Sunrise is the standout time to visit, as the light rises roughly behind the structure and casts a warm glow across the shingle with soft reflections in the shallow water on either side of the spit. A wide angle lens works well to capture the scale of the spit against the sky, while a short telephoto lets you isolate the lighthouse with the Isle of Wight or passing vessels in the background. Note that the walk along the spit from Milford on Sea is around a mile and a half each way, so allow extra time. (Milford on Sea, England, United Kingdom)
