Perched on the southern tip of a remote, uninhabited island in Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay, this 1911 lighthouse offers a rugged and isolated subject that rewards the effort required to reach it. The white tower against open water makes for clean, graphic compositions, and you can work the surrounding rocky shoreline to find foreground interest like wave-worn stones or driftwood. Try shooting from low angles near the waterline to emphasize the scale of the structure against the expansive lake sky, or pull back with a wider lens to capture the lighthouse in the context of the island's wild, forested shoreline. Golden hour light hits beautifully here with minimal light pollution and no crowds. Access is by boat only, so plan your trip carefully around weather and water conditions on Lake Superior, which can turn quickly. A telephoto lens is also useful for isolating the tower details.
