Image Lake
Perched high in the Glacier Peak Wilderness, Image Lake is one of the most celebrated alpine reflection shots in the Pacific Northwest, offering a mirror-like surface that captures Glacier Peak's snow-capped volcanic cone on calm mornings. The classic composition places you on the north or northwest shore, shooting across the lake with the mountain centered in the reflection; a wide to standard zoom in the 24-50mm range works well for balancing the foreground water, surrounding meadows, and the peak beyond. Sunrise is the prime window, when alpenglow hits the summit and the water is glassy before afternoon winds pick up. Getting here requires a strenuous 17-plus mile hike with significant elevation gain, so plan to camp nearby and shoot over multiple mornings for the best conditions. Polarizing filters help manage glare on the water surface. (Snohomish County, Washington, United States)
