Indian Hill Cemetery & Russell Chapel
Perched on a gentle hill in Middletown, this 19th-century Gothic Revival chapel built from Portland Brownstone is one of Connecticut's more quietly striking architectural subjects. The chapel's steep pointed arches, ornate stone carvings, and weathered texture reward close inspection with a macro or standard lens, while stepping back lets you frame it against the surrounding cemetery and mature trees. Overcast days are ideal, softening shadows and drawing out the warm reddish-brown tones of the brownstone without harsh contrast. Early morning light in golden hour can also work well, especially from the southeast where the facade catches warm directional light. The cemetery grounds give you room to experiment with compositions using headstones, iron fencing, or tree lines as foreground elements. The site is easily accessible and the grounds are generally quiet, making it a relaxed shoot with no crowds to work around. (Middletown, Connecticut, United States)
