Island of Tears (or Island of Courage and Sorrow) is a small island created as a memorial dedicated to the soldiers who perished in the conflict involving Soviet forces in Afghanistan. The island's focal point is a small chapel surrounded by statues of those who were left to mourn the dead - widows, mothers, sisters. Inside the names of over 700 Belarusian soldiers who died in the war are inscribed. The island also has a statue of a young guardian angel who continues to literally shed tears for those lost in violent conflict worldwide. (Minsk, Belarus)
