The Kalbarri Skywalk is a pair of soaring cantilevered steel platforms that stretch out over the Murchison River gorge 100m above the river. The grated walkway lets you see straight through to the water below, and the 270 degree views from up here gives an endless feeling view of the gorge system and surrounding bush. The platforms are built from weathering steel that has rusted to match the red sandstone around it, so the whole structure blends into the landscape. Sunrise and sunset are the ideal times to shoot. The red gorge walls light up in warm tones and the shadows through the canyon add depth to the scene. The skywalk is open 24 hours, so if you are into astrophotography you can shoot after dark too. Midday in summer can be tough; there is no shade on the platforms and it gets extremely hot. The walk from the car park is flat, sealed, and short, so getting set up is easy but the area is popular so it can be tricky to get alot of space to shoot. Along the paths you will find interpretive artwork by local Nanda artists and sculptures of native animals, which make for nice detail shots on the way in. The drive from Kalbarri town takes about 30 minutes on sealed roads. Since the skywalk is inside the National Park entry fees will apply. (Kalbarri National Park, Western Australia, Australia)
